Mine didn't involve any trick or treating... except for two kiddos who I decided to treat. We have friends who have children that are just over a year old and I wanted to make them festive Halloween themed cookies! They are still a little too young to understand the entire concept of the awesomeness that is Halloween. Heck, the fact that they keep their costumes on for longer than 30 minutes is a miracle!
For the little girl that was dressed up as a skunk and for the little fellow dressed as a monster, I decided to make banana oatmeal cookies. I knew the kids would love the sweetness from the banana and the parents would be happy that the cookies were somewhat nutritious because of the oatmeal. Well, good thing I mentioned to the parents that I wanted to make their children some treats because there are some dietary restrictions I wasn't aware of. One child is allergic to eggs, dairy and nuts while the other child does not have allergies but the parents preferred that their child had fair trade and organic products. Okay. No problem!
For the chocolate, I knew I could get vegan and fair trade chocolate from Vita Health.
I found Endangered Species Chocolates that are teamed up with the Rainforest Alliance and Non-GMO project to support ecosystem conservation and honour farmers. To learn more about this company click here. They had milk chocolate option or a completely vegan option.
I also found this fun and well themed candy.
I am very well aware that a one year old should not eat gummy candy, but, this candy was advertised to be made in a nut-free facility, gluten free, gelatin free and natural fruit juices were used. This one I picked up for the parents.
Now onto the cookie! What is a cookie without some sprinkles? I found these spooky sprinkles at Safeway for $4.99.
I kept the cookie recipe simple with bananas, canola oil, vanilla, oatmeal (not instant) and to cover all my bases I made them gluten-free by picking up some rice flour from Bulk Barn. Bulk Barn also sold glittered orange icing that I couldn't resist and also purchased along with a cookie cutter in the shape of a pumpkin.
Can you tell that I used the pumpkin cookie cutter?
How about now?
It was fun to decorate them and the kids gobbled the cookies up!
